I’m John, the titular starving nerd.

This domain started as an AOL screen name during my undergrad years. I wanted an email address to use for job applications that said “I really need a job, but I’m pretty smart.” My friend Brian almost immediately suggested “starvingnerd,” and I went with that.

I haven’t used the domain in many years. I’m not as starving these days, but I like to think I’m still a bit nerdy.

I had a stupid encounter while converting my homelab from host profile to the newer config profiles. It’s the sort of silly thing I wanted to share, but isn’t interesting enough to ever remember to tell in person (and frankly, I don’t think anyone I talk to in person would care all that much). To me, that’s exactly the sort of content that makes tech blogs readable. So I figured maybe I’d try doing one of those.

Currently, I mostly work with VMware VCF, focusing largely on VCF Automation. I expect that’s what I’ll mostly post about. Cards on the table, I don’t have a very firm plan at all so this may wind up slanting more technology or more personal. I stay pretty busy, so it also might wind up abandoned soon. Possibilities are part of the adventure.

I work for a VMware/Broadcom partner designing and delivering virtualization solutions for a broad range of customers. I also have some academic aspirations, but haven’t accomplished enough to really include anything interesting about that. Yet. Hopefully.

I’m married, mostly listen to metal, and have four cats that I have rescued (or kidnapped, depending on perspective) from the wild Cleveland suburbs. They are all at various stages of domestication, having come into my home as feral guys. None of the cats are 100% sold on people being safe yet, but they all seem very happy with the indoor life.
